National Novel Writing Month - FAQs

National Novel Writing Month - FAQs: "For those of you who did not hear of her last year, the Magical Novel Writing Faerie is what I like to call a muse-for-hire. Last year I started writing 'visits' to people in need, be it help with Writer's Block, a stubborn internal editor, uncooperative characters, or even a celebration that they were needing. After the first few I wrote, people began telling me how much help she had been and thanking me, so I started sending out more 'visits' to whoever asked for them."

Toxic Granny

Toxic Granny

Warriors often underestimate Toxic Granny's fighting abilities. She can be very aggressive, and because of the deference paid to the elderly, not only does Toxic Granny easily attract allies to aid in her defense, but her foes are reluctant to employ their strongest weapons against her. Prudent Warriors avoid confrontations with Toxic Granny because there is ignominy in defeat and no glory
in victory.

Dietary Supplement Fact Sheet: Calcium

Dietary Supplement Fact Sheet: Calcium: "There is a widespread concern that Americans are not meeting the recommended intake for calcium. According to the Continuing Survey of Food Intakes of Individuals (CSFII 1994-96), the following percentage of Americans are not meeting their recommended intake for calcium [3]:
44% boys and 58% girls ages 6-11
64% boys and 87% girls ages 12-19
55% men and 78% of women ages 20+

What foods provide calcium?
In the United States (U.S.), milk, yogurt and cheese are the major contributors of calcium in the typical diet [4]. The inadequate intake of dairy foods may explain why some Americans are deficient in calcium since dairy foods are the major source of calcium in the diet [4]. The U.S. Department of Agriculture's Food Guide Pyramid recommends that individuals two years and older eat 2-3 servings of dairy products per day. A serving is equal to:
1 cup (8 fl oz) of milk
8 oz of yogurt
1.5 oz of natural cheese (such as Cheddar)
2.0 oz of processed cheese (such as American)"

Overview of Osteoporosis

New Drugs 2004 - Part 2
and scrioll down to Ibandronate (Boniva)

The total body bone mass depends on a delicate balance between osteoclastic action (resorption) and osteoblastic activity (formation). Osteoporosis is the outcome when the rate of resorption exceeds formation–that is, when too much bone is destroyed or too little is formed.15,16

Bone mass increases naturally during early life to reach a peak in the late-20s to middle-30s. Loss of mass then begins to some extent in both women and men; accelerating in women, as stated earlier, following menopause and continuing well beyond the 80s. Reports of women losing up to 15% of their bone mass over the first 5 years following onset of menopause are common. This loss is followed at a slower rate of decline that can lead to an overall loss of approximately 35% of cortical bone and up to 50% of trabecular bone mass.

Boniva increases the bone mineral density (BMD) and reduces the incidence of vertebral fractures in postmenopausal women with osteoporosis. Osteoporosis may be confirmed by the presence or history of fracture or by detecting a low bone mass (BMD more than 2 SD below the premenopausal mean).

Consideration should be given to such factors as a family history of osteoporosis, early menopause, previous fracture, high bone turnover, reduced BMD (at least 1 SD below the premenopausal mean), thin body frame, Caucasian or Asian race, and smoking. These are associated with increased risk for developing osteoporosis and fractures. Their presence may be relevant when considering the use of Boniva.

Awsome Water

Awsome Water: " One glass of water deters hunger pangs for 98% of the dieters observed in a University of Washington study.
The biggest trigger of daytime fatigue is lack of water.
Preliminary research indicates that 8-10 glasses of water a day could significantly ease back and joint pain for up to 80% of sufferers.
A mere 2% drop in body water can trigger fuzzy short-term memory, trouble with basic math, and difficulty focusing on the computer screen or on a printed page. "

Weblogs and rumours

Weblogs.com sold to Verisign (kottke.org): "I like how when a weblog has two independent sources on something, it's a 'rumor'..."

Bilingual conversations (kottke.org): "A few weeks ago, I had a conversation with someone (probably Meg) who had overheard a conversation in which the two participants spoke in a fluid mixture of English and their native language. Today at lunch, I overheard a conversation between two Hispanic women who were unconsciously switching back and forth between Spanish and English. Much of their conversation was in Spanish, but there were English words sprinkled in and the occasional complete sentences in English."

(the technical term seems to be "bilingual codeswitching").

Bariatric Survivor

Everybody knows by now that when you block off part of your stomach with surgery, A person can lose tremendous amounts of weight, typically up to 100lbs or more.

What most people do not know is that gastric bypass surgery or stomach stapling, is potentially dangerous and can cost between $25,000 to $40,000 or more in out-of-pocket expenses because many health insurance companies won't pay for the surgery, and even if they do, co-payments and other costs can add up quickly.

That is why only stars like Roseanne Barr and Carnie Wilson who can afford to pay for these procedures have them. Now there is a non-surgical alternative. Zetacap™ works the same way as gastric bypass surgery but instead of blocking the stomach with a staple, it fills the stomach with a natural balloon that makes it virtually impossible to eat! You will feel full all the time. You just can’t eat!

or eat a high fibre diet
